Overview
Egality supported a research study by Imperial College London exploring stigma in people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), with a focus on reaching individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds. We partnered with 2 community organisations and 3 people with lived experience to co-develop culturally relevant recruitment materials including videos, posters and pamphlets, to support a targeted online recruitment campaign.
Outcomes
- Delivered a 6-month recruitment campaign across social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter), as well as through newsletters and WhatsApp groups
- Engaged people from South Asian, Black, African, and Caribbean communities living with type 1 diabetes related stigma through community outreach
- Developed and delivered bespoke materials to increase survey respondents from these underrepresented communities e.g., social media posts, flyers, etc.
- Developed 10+ videos with 3 community advocates living with type 1 diabetes, including a group discussion on their experiences with stigma, personal anecdotes, etc.
Video outputs
Short videos with community advocates living with type 1 diabetes were developed on issues like:
- What was your first experience of stigma?
- How does stigma related to your type 1 diabetes affect your work life?
- How does stigma related to your type 1 diabetes affect your personal life?
- What would you say to people who are unaware of the challenges faced by those living with type 1 diabetes?
- Why do you think its important for people with type 1 diabetes to talk more openly about their stigma and experiences?
